The goal of the Triangle Vein Clinic - the area's original vein clinic - is to treat problems before patients develop secondary complications, such as blood clots, ulcers or post-phlebitic syndrome. Most veins can be treated by sclerotherapy, a procedure which offers a non-surgical means of symptomatic and cosmetic relief. Before the advent of sclerotherapy, varicose veins were treated surgically with many small incisions. Now, only a small percentage of patients will still need surgery to treat vein problems. With sclerotherapy and a minor surgical intervention, Dr. Medina is able to eliminate painful and unsightly veins and improve leg appearance. It is helpful for this discussion to define the terms of varicose and spider veins. Varicose veins are usually greenish blue in color, larger, and will often be raised (protuberant) above the skin. They are most commonly caused by faulty valves that allow blood to flow in a reverse direction. Spider veins are generally red, purplish blue, and appear on the skin surface.
